Rise in Problem Gambling among Women

A recent article in Harpers Bazaar suggested that problem gambling is on the rise among women. A few possible reasons were suggested. Sometime women are impacted by their household partner being a bettor, such as sports betting. It is not that women are overlooked completely when seeking help. However many find they do not get the level of support that feel they should.

    Women and Problem Gambling Study

The UK Gambling commission did a recent survey and did see a rise in gambling participation. There was a rise in both men and women that gambled. This is very logical.

They stated “Our latest participation data shows that nearly half (42%) of women have gambled in the last four weeks”.

Based on that study conducted late in 2021, it was estimated then that 42% of the women surveyed had gambled withing the previous 30 days when asked.

“The problem gambling and low risk rates are both lower than male counterparts, however in 2021 we have seen the moderate risk rate ‘balance out’, and the rates for men and women have become almost equal.” Based on that quote we could possibly assume the rate of increase could be more leveled out.

We wonder if a new study was conducted today how much that might change. We think the participation rates would be far higher, for both men and women, but wonder the the percentage increase would be vastly different or not.

    What is a Gambling Disorder

American Psychiatric Association defined the disorder as “Gambling disorder is identified by a pattern of repeated and ongoing betting and wagering that continues despite creating multiple problems in several areas of an individual’s life.”

They also said “Men are more likely to start gambling at a younger age compared to women but women can progress to problem gambling much faster.” That is an interesting statement and possibly needs more study.

    Thought Provoking and Logical

While a number of the articles and statements cited were interesting we do wonder if the increase is the same for men and women. Clearly it is good that organizations are aware and treatment centers also recognize the difference. Possibly in future studies it could be determined more accurately if the increases are a higher percent among women.

Regardless, if you do like to play the slots or gamble whether online or at land based casino, Please Gamble responsibly. When the fun stops, Stop.
